“A Lifetime of Health”

Carpal tunnel syndrome causes tingling, numbness and pain in the hand, and it’s one of the most common conditions our hand therapists see at our Corio and Norlane clinics in Geelong.

What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

The median nerve passes through a narrow space at the front of the wrist called the carpal tunnel. When that space becomes crowded or the nerve is compressed, it causes symptoms in the thumb, index, middle and part of the ring finger.

Common signs

  • Tingling or numbness in the thumb and first fingers
  • Symptoms that wake you at night
  • Shaking the hand to “wake it up”
  • Dropping things or a weaker grip
  • Aching in the wrist or forearm

It is more common during pregnancy, with diabetes or thyroid conditions, and in work involving repetitive gripping or vibrating tools.

How hand therapy helps

Our hand therapists can make a custom wrist splint to wear at night, which keeps the wrist in a position that takes pressure off the nerve and is often a first step in treatment. We also give advice on changing grip, work tasks and positions that bring on symptoms, and exercises where they suit your situation.

Our hand therapists Maddison Dowell and Marley Cockfield both work with carpal tunnel and other hand and wrist conditions.

When to see your GP

See your GP if numbness is constant, if you notice weakness or wasting of the muscles at the base of your thumb, or if symptoms are not improving with treatment. They may arrange nerve tests or refer you to a specialist to discuss options such as an injection or surgery. If you do have surgery, hand therapy afterwards helps with scar care, swelling and getting your grip strength back.

Mild to moderate carpal tunnel often improves with night splinting and changes to activities. If symptoms are severe, constant or getting worse, your GP may refer you to discuss other options.

Do you make splints for carpal tunnel?

Yes. Our hand therapists make custom splints in the clinic, shaped to your wrist.

Do I need a referral to see a hand therapist?

No referral is needed. You can book directly with our hand therapists at either clinic.
